Kenya's economic growth rate to halve: November 2008
Kenya's economic growth declined by nearly a half this financial year from earlier projections. The growth rate is currently at between 4 and 5 per cent against the expected 8 per cent. This is in comparison to last year's 7 per cent growth. The decline has been attributed to post election violence, congestion at the Port of Mombasa and rising inflation that has affected the purchases of inputs.
SEACOM's undersea cable work begins: November 2008
The construction of SEACOM's 15,000 km fibre optic undersea cable, linking South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia to India and Europe commenced in Maputo. SEACOM which will be the first cable to provide high speed broadband and inexpensive bandwidth to countries in East Africa is privately funded and is expected to be complete within the next eight months.
Safaricom sponsors an innovative product Business expo: November 2008
Mobile Operator Safaricom was the major sponsor of the 21st Century Business Trade Fair at the Oshwal Centre. The trade fair was aimed at showcasing the innovative products and services in a bid to enhance competition and creativity among the participating firms. Safaricom has also previously supported such trade fairs as the Engineering Students exhibition and the Annual Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Expo.
